We believe that everything we have comes from God. We are merely the stewards for those gifts. For all God has given us, God asks for a mere 10% (tithe) to be returned. This 10% we use to try to further the kingdom.
“You do well in everything else. You do well in faith and in speaking. You do well in knowledge and in complete commitment. And you do well in your love for us. So make sure that you also do well in the grace of giving to others.”2 Corinthians 8:7
Stewardship—to serve as one who manages another’s property, finances or other affairs—is not just means for the church to raise money. It is a way of life that recognizes that everything we have is God’s and we are simply managing those resources while here on earth.
Methodist Approach To Stewardship
John Wesley urged those in connection with him to “earn all you can and save all you can so that you can give all you can.” He modeled modest living and sacrificial giving. Wesley made sure that those early classes of “Methodists” took weekly offerings to help others in need.
Today, we, as United Methodists, join others to help all of God’s children whenever and wherever we can, just as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes when the crowd grew hungry. Simply by being a part of The United Methodist Church we help people all over the world because of our connectional ministries.
